What is a football squares pool?

A football squares pool is one of the most popular football games around. Everyone picks one or more squares on a 10×10 grid (100 squares total). After all squares are claimed, numbers 0–9 are randomly assigned to each row and column. At the end of each quarter, the last digit of each team’s score determines which square wins.

SquaresPool.com puts the whole thing online. You get your own pool page, players claim their squares on their phone or computer, and the site figures out the winner each quarter automatically — no paper grid, no spreadsheet headaches.

If you're not sure “what the heck is a squares pool”?, then looking at an example sheet I think will be better than 1,000 words in describing what we mean by “squares pool”: Squares Pool Example

So, at SquaresPool.com we are doing pretty much what you see there, BUT we do it in an electronic format. (Much more fun!)

Which numbers are best in a football squares pool?

Numbers are assigned randomly after everyone claims their squares, so no one gets to pick their numbers. But some digits come up more often in NFL scores than others. Here’s the breakdown based on 267 NFL games (534 scores):

Football squares pool FAQ

How do players claim their squares?

Each pool gets its own page. Share the link with your group and players claim squares online from their phone or computer. No paper, no collecting names manually.

When are the numbers assigned?

After all squares are claimed, the game runner generates the numbers. They’re assigned randomly, so no one knows their numbers ahead of time.

Can I run a Monday Night Football squares pool every week?

Yes. With Squarespool Pro you can clear just the numbers (keeping the same player squares) between games. With the free version, create a new pool page each week.

What if I already have a pool running on a spreadsheet?

You can upload your spreadsheet — strip it down to just the 10×10 player name grid and import it. The site will handle winner calculations from there.

Where do I find my pool if I lost the link?

Search for your pool here. Your pool page URL looks like squarespool.com/yourpoolname.htm.
